International Credit Union Day: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, credit unions around the world will celebrate the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day®, a global celebration recognizing the impact credit unions and financial cooperatives have on the lives of their members and communities.

Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been an opportunity to reflect on the history of the credit union movement, celebrate its achievements and recognize the people who make it successful. This year's theme, "Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World," is a powerful reminder that while economic conditions, technology and financial trends continue to evolve, credit unions remain focused on a simple and enduring purpose: people helping people.

At Ascentra Credit Union, that purpose has guided us since our founding in 1950. What began with a small group of individuals seeking fair and accessible financial services has grown into a member-owned cooperative serving over 43,000 members throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois. While much has changed over the past 76 years, our commitment to helping people achieve financial well-being remains unchanged.

One of the things that makes credit unions unique is that our members are not just customers. They are owners. Every member plays a role in our success and helps shape our future. The strength of the credit union movement comes from individuals joining together to create opportunities not only for themselves, but also for their neighbors and communities.

That cooperative spirit is alive and well today. Whether we are helping a member purchase their first home, save for their future, recover from a financial setback, or reach a lifelong goal, we are fulfilling the same mission that inspired the credit union movement more than a century ago.

We also see that mission reflected in community investments, such as our new branch currently under construction in Rock Island. The project is helping to expand access to trusted financial services in an area that has historically been underserved, demonstrating how credit unions continue to collaborate with communities to create opportunities and foster economic well-being.

International Credit Union Day also reminds us that Ascentra is part of a global movement dedicated to strengthening the financial well-being of members, families and communities through the cooperative principle of people helping people.

Most importantly, it is a celebration of you, our members. Your trust, engagement and commitment to the cooperative principle of people helping people have shaped Ascentra's history and continues to guide our future.
