Generational Wisdom

Generational Wealth

In 2025, my 88-year-old father passed away. A once-strong, active and independent man spent his final years gradually losing his mobility and independence. After a lifetime of care from my parents, it became my turn to care for him. When he moved to an assisted living facility closer to home, I was given a gift I did not expect, time.

In those final six months, I learned more about my father’s well-lived life than I had in the previous 55 years of mine. He shared stories of triumphs and setbacks, wise decisions and hard lessons. As I worked preparing his home for sale, I uncovered keepsakes and memories, each one carrying a story he was eager to tell. I always admired his work ethic, a trait my sister and I proudly carry forward, but it was his words of wisdom during our daily visits that will stay with me forever.

Throughout his life, my father lived humbly, gave generously, and saved faithfully for the future. Although it was not extravagant wealth, and he may not have called it “generational wealth,” it was something meaningful to pass on. Now that I think about it, what he truly built was generational wisdom.

My mother played an equally important role. While Dad worked, Mom managed the household finances. When I was a young teenager, she handed me the responsibility of balancing the family checkbook. That simple act gave me insight into what it took to run a household. I learned what bills were paid, how much they cost, and how often they were due. More importantly, I learned that money conversations shouldn’t be off-limits, and that they were essential. That experience shaped my financial confidence in life.

Not everyone feels comfortable sharing financial knowledge or opening the door to those conversations. That is where Ascentra can help.

When the time comes to pass along financial wisdom to your children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, having trusted resources can make all the difference. Ascentra offers practical tools and guidance on budgeting, balancing a checkbook, buying a home, purchasing a vehicle, and more. Sometimes the message is better received when it comes from a trusted third party, especially after your child’s inevitable eye roll, when it’s brought up.

Now is the perfect time to start the conversation. Let Ascentra help you turn everyday financial habits into lasting generational wisdom. Together, we can help the next generation not only build wealth, but confidence.

As always, thank you for being a valued member of Ascentra Credit Union.
